Google Search Console is Google's free tool that shows exactly which searches bring people to your website, where you rank, which pages are indexed and what technical problems are holding you back. For an Indore business, the most valuable uses are finding keywords where you already rank on page two, checking that important pages are indexed, spotting mobile and speed issues, and tracking whether SEO work is actually increasing clicks. Setup takes about 15 minutes.
Why Every Indore Business Website Needs Search Console
Most business owners in Indore we speak to have a website, many have Google Analytics, and very few have looked at Google Search Console. That is a missed opportunity, because Search Console answers questions no other free tool can:
- What exact searches are people typing when they see my website in Google?
- Which of my pages actually appear in search, and which are invisible?
- Am I ranking for "[my service] Indore", and where exactly?
- Is something technically broken that is stopping Google from reading my site?
- Is my SEO agency's work actually producing results?
It is data straight from Google, it is free, and it does not require any technical skill to read once you know where to look. This guide walks through setup, the reports that matter for a local business, and a monthly routine you can follow in under 30 minutes. You can find Google's official documentation in the Search Console Help Center.
Search Console vs Google Analytics: What's The Difference?
People often confuse the two. The simplest way to remember:
| Question | Search Console | Google Analytics 4 |
|---|---|---|
| What did people search before clicking? | Yes | No (mostly hidden) |
| Where do I rank for a keyword? | Yes (average position) | No |
| Is my page indexed by Google? | Yes | No |
| What did visitors do after landing? | No | Yes |
| Which traffic source converts best? | No | Yes |
| Does it include Instagram, ads and direct traffic? | No — Google Search only | Yes — all sources |
Search Console tells you what happens before the click. Analytics tells you what happens after. You need both, and they can be linked together.
Setting Up Search Console Step By Step
- Go to search.google.com/search-console and sign in with the Google account you want to own the data. Use a business account you control, not your developer's personal email.
- Choose a property type. A Domain property (for example,
yourbusiness.com) covers every version of your site — http, https, www and non-www, and subdomains. It requires adding a DNS TXT record at your domain registrar (GoDaddy, Hostinger, BigRock and so on). A URL-prefix property covers only one exact version and can be verified with an HTML file, meta tag or your Google Analytics account. - Verify ownership. For a Domain property, copy the TXT record, paste it into your registrar's DNS settings, and click Verify. DNS changes can take a few minutes to a few hours.
- Submit your sitemap. Go to Sitemaps and enter your sitemap URL, usually
sitemap.xmlorsitemap_index.xmlfor WordPress sites using Yoast or Rank Math. - Add users. Give your agency or developer "Full" or "Restricted" access under Settings → Users and permissions, rather than sharing your password. You keep ownership.
- Link it to Google Analytics 4 from the GA4 admin panel so search data appears alongside behaviour data.
Data only starts collecting from the day you verify (though some historical data may appear). Set it up today even if you won't look at it for a month — you will want the history later.
The Performance Report: Your Most Valuable Screen
Open Performance → Search results. You will see four metrics:
- Total clicks — how many times someone clicked through to your site from Google Search.
- Total impressions — how many times your site appeared in search results someone saw.
- Average CTR — clicks divided by impressions.
- Average position — your average ranking across all the queries you appeared for.
Click all four boxes so they display together. Then look at the tabs below the graph: Queries, Pages, Countries, Devices, Search appearance and Dates.
Queries tab
This is where the gold is. It lists the actual searches that showed your site. For an Indore bakery you might see "cake shop Vijay Nagar", "eggless cake Indore", "birthday cake home delivery Indore" and dozens more. Many owners are surprised by how varied these are.
Pages tab
Shows which of your pages get impressions and clicks. If your homepage gets everything and service pages get almost nothing, your service pages probably need work — see our on-page SEO checklist.
Devices tab
For most Indore consumer businesses, mobile will dominate. If your mobile CTR or position is much weaker than desktop, look at mobile speed and layout.
Countries tab
Useful for exporters and B2B manufacturers in Pithampur or Sanwer Road targeting international buyers, and for spotting irrelevant foreign traffic.
Finding Quick-Win Keywords (The Page-Two Trick)
This is the single most useful thing a busy owner can do in Search Console:
- In the Performance report, set the date range to the last 3 months.
- Click the Queries tab and sort by Impressions.
- Add a filter: Position greater than 8 (click the filter icon, choose Position).
- Look for queries with healthy impressions and positions between 8 and 20.
These are searches where Google already considers your site relevant — you're on page one's bottom or page two — but you're not getting clicks. Small improvements often push these into the top five:
- Add the exact query phrase naturally to the page's title tag and H1 if it isn't there.
- Add a section that directly answers what that query asks.
- Add FAQs addressing related questions.
- Add internal links from other relevant pages using descriptive anchor text.
- Improve the meta description so the listing is more compelling.
A query like "physiotherapy home visit Indore" sitting at position 11 with 400 impressions a month can become meaningful business once it reaches position 3.
Filtering For Indore And Neighbourhood Searches
To understand local demand, filter queries containing local terms:
- Query contains "indore" — your city-level visibility.
- Query contains "near me" — proximity searches.
- Query contains area names — "vijay nagar", "palasia", "bhawarkuan", "rau", "nipania".
Use the Custom (regex) filter option to combine several at once, for example: vijay nagar|palasia|nipania|scheme 54|bhawarkuan. This shows which neighbourhoods already associate with your business and informs your hyperlocal SEO and neighbourhood pages.
You can also filter for question queries with a regex such as ^(how|what|why|which|when|can|is|does) — these are the questions your audience asks, and perfect material for FAQ and blog content that AI answer engines like to cite, as we explain in our AEO & GEO guide.
Understanding The Page Indexing Report
Go to Indexing → Pages. This shows how many of your pages Google has indexed (eligible to appear in search) and why others are not indexed.
Common reasons and what they mean:
| Status | What it means | Should you worry? |
|---|---|---|
| Crawled – currently not indexed | Google saw the page but decided not to index it yet | Yes, if it's an important page — often a content quality or duplication signal |
| Discovered – currently not indexed | Google knows the URL but hasn't crawled it | Sometimes — may indicate weak internal linking or crawl budget on large sites |
| Duplicate without user-selected canonical | Google sees it as a copy of another page | Check whether you intended this |
| Excluded by 'noindex' tag | The page tells Google not to index it | Only a problem if it's a page you want in search |
| Page with redirect | The URL redirects elsewhere | Usually fine |
| Not found (404) | The page doesn't exist | Fine if deleted intentionally; fix links pointing to it |
| Blocked by robots.txt | Your robots.txt file blocks crawling | A serious issue if it's blocking important pages |
A classic Indore website problem: a developer launches the new site but forgets to remove the "Discourage search engines" setting in WordPress, which adds noindex to every page. Search Console reveals this immediately.
The URL Inspection Tool
Paste any URL from your site into the search bar at the top. Search Console tells you:
- Whether the page is indexed.
- When Google last crawled it.
- Which canonical URL Google chose.
- Whether it's mobile-friendly and has valid structured data.
After publishing a new page or making major updates, click Request Indexing. It doesn't guarantee instant indexing, but it puts the page in the queue. Don't overuse it — requesting the same URL repeatedly doesn't speed things up.
Core Web Vitals And Page Experience
Under Experience → Core Web Vitals, Search Console groups your URLs as Good, Needs improvement or Poor for mobile and desktop, based on real Chrome user data. The three metrics are:
- LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) — how quickly the main content loads.
- INP (Interaction to Next Paint) — how quickly the page responds when someone taps or clicks.
- CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) — how much the layout jumps around while loading.
Smaller sites may see "Not enough usage data" — that's normal. You can test individual pages with PageSpeed Insights. Our Core Web Vitals guide explains what to fix first.
Enhancements: Structured Data Reports
If your site uses schema markup, Search Console shows reports for recognised types — Breadcrumbs, FAQ, Products, Reviews snippets, Videos and others — along with errors and warnings. An e-commerce store in Indore should watch the Merchant listings and Product snippets reports closely, because errors there can remove rich results like price and availability from search listings. Our schema markup guide explains how to implement these correctly.
Links Report
The Links report shows your top linked pages (internal and external), top linking sites and top linking text. Use it to:
- See which pages you link to most internally — are they the pages you most want to rank?
- Discover which external sites link to you, such as local directories, news sites or partners.
- Spot suspicious spammy links, though Google usually ignores these automatically.
For building quality links, see our backlink building strategy for Indore. Internal linking gaps are something our Local SEO team fixes early, because well-linked location and service pages rank faster.
Security, Manual Actions And Messages
Check Security & Manual Actions occasionally. A manual action means a Google reviewer found a policy violation — for example, unnatural links or spammy content — and it can remove pages from search. A security issue flags hacked content or malware. Hacked WordPress sites injecting pharmacy or gambling spam pages are unfortunately common among small business sites that aren't maintained; our website maintenance guide covers prevention.
Also enable email notifications so Google alerts you to critical problems automatically.
Using Search Console To Check Your Agency's Work
If you pay an agency for SEO, Search Console lets you verify results independently. Compare periods using the Date → Compare option, for example the last three months vs the previous three months, or the same period last year to account for seasonality. Look at:
- Clicks and impressions trend for non-brand queries (filter out your business name).
- Number of queries you rank for in the top 10.
- Performance of the specific pages they worked on.
- Indexing errors trend.
An honest agency will welcome this. Our guide on choosing between in-house and agency SEO covers what good reporting should look like.
A 20-Minute Monthly Search Console Routine
- Performance, last 28 days vs previous period. Are clicks up or down? Which pages moved?
- Queries at positions 8–20. Pick one or two to improve this month.
- New queries. Anything unexpected that deserves its own page or FAQ?
- Page indexing. Any spike in errors or important pages dropping out?
- Core Web Vitals. Any new poor URLs?
- Manual actions and security. Should be empty.
- Note one action and do it.
Consistency matters far more than depth. Twenty minutes a month compounds into a clear understanding of how Google sees your business.
Common Search Console Mistakes
- Letting a developer or former agency own the property and losing access when the relationship ends. Always keep yourself as owner.
- Panicking over average position. It's an average across every query, including irrelevant ones; look at specific queries instead.
- Ignoring impressions. Rising impressions with flat clicks usually means you're ranking more but your titles or positions need work — an opportunity, not a failure.
- Chasing every "not indexed" URL. Many exclusions (redirects, deliberate noindex, parameter URLs) are fine.
- Never linking Search Console and GA4. You lose the connection between search queries and conversions.
What Search Console Can't Tell You
Search Console doesn't show your Google Business Profile performance (calls, direction requests) — that's inside your Business Profile dashboard. It also doesn't yet show separate, detailed data for how often you appear inside AI answers across every AI tool, and it doesn't cover Bing, which has its own free Bing Webmaster Tools. Bing matters more than people think because its index powers parts of several AI assistants, so it's worth verifying your site there too — it can import your setup directly from Search Console.
Brand vs Non-Brand Queries: The Number That Really Matters
A large share of clicks for most Indore businesses come from people searching the business name. Those people already know you — they would have found you anyway. The real measure of SEO growth is non-brand traffic: people who searched for a service, not for you.
To separate them, add a Query filter that does not contain your brand name (and common misspellings). Save a comparison of non-brand clicks month over month. If non-brand clicks are rising, your SEO is genuinely attracting new customers. If only brand clicks are rising, growth is probably coming from offline word of mouth, ads or social — still good, but not SEO.
To exclude several spellings at once, choose Custom (regex), switch the dropdown to Doesn't match regex, and enter something like yourbrand|your brand|yourbrnd. This keeps every query that doesn't mention any version of your name.
Diagnosing A Sudden Traffic Drop
If clicks fall sharply, work through these questions in order before panicking:
- Is it seasonal? Compare with the same period last year. Coaching institutes drop after admission season; AC service businesses drop after summer.
- Is it one page or the whole site? Use the Pages tab with a date comparison. One page falling suggests a content or competitor issue; the whole site suggests a technical problem or a broad algorithm update.
- Did impressions fall, or only clicks? Falling clicks with stable impressions often means an AI Overview, a new competitor ad or a changed search layout is taking attention — not a ranking loss.
- Did anything change on the site? A redesign, a new plugin, a changed URL structure or an accidental noindex are common culprits.
- Was there a Google update? Check the Google Search Status Dashboard, which lists confirmed ranking updates and incidents.
- Any manual action or security issue? Check that section.
Write down the date the drop started — it's the single most useful piece of information for diagnosis.
Exporting Data And Building Simple Reports
Search Console's interface shows up to 1,000 rows per report. For deeper analysis:
- Use the Export button (top right) to download data to Google Sheets or Excel.
- Connect Search Console to Looker Studio (free) to build a simple monthly dashboard showing clicks, impressions, top queries and top pages alongside GA4 conversions.
- For larger sites, the Search Console API or the bulk data export to BigQuery removes row limits.
For most small Indore businesses, a one-page Looker Studio dashboard reviewed monthly is plenty. It also makes conversations with your agency or developer far more concrete.
Search Appearance, Discover And Other Reports
A few additional reports are worth knowing about:
- Search appearance filter in the Performance report shows clicks from rich results such as FAQ, review snippets, videos and product results, so you can see whether schema is paying off.
- Discover appears if your content shows in Google Discover — the article feed on Android phones and the Google app. Local news, food, events and lifestyle content from Indore can appear here.
- Shopping tab listings and merchant reports matter for e-commerce stores; our e-commerce SEO guide covers product feed basics.
- Crawl stats (under Settings) shows how often Google crawls your site and whether your server responds quickly — useful when diagnosing slow hosting.
The Bottom Line
Google Search Console is the closest thing to a direct conversation with Google about your website. For an Indore business, 15 minutes of setup and 20 minutes a month reveals which searches bring customers, which pages need attention and whether anything is quietly broken. Start with the page-two quick wins — they're often the fastest route to more enquiries. If you'd like an expert to interpret the data and act on it, our SEO services and technical SEO team start every engagement with a full Search Console review, included in our free audit.
